Development and Validation of Analytical Methods for the Determination of Chlorinated Phenolics in Pulp and Wastewater Treatment Plant Sludges, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Procedures for the determination of chlorinated phenolic compounds in bleached pulp and wastewater treatment plant sludges have been investigated. Survey experiments identified ethanol/toluene Soxhlet extraction as the method giving maximum recoveries for the widest range of compounds. Addition of 70 mL reagent water to the (300 mL) ethanol/toluene extract followed by a Kuderna-Danish concentration gives an aqueous phase which is acetylated in-situ and then subjected to a silica gel clean up prior to full scan GC/MS analysis. Single laboratory precision for the method is presented by matrix type. Nominal full scan MS detection limits of 25 ppb (ug/kg wet weight) to 500 ppb (ug/kg dry weight) can be achieved with the reported method. Preliminary results from a sample storage stability study testing freezing for preservation are pre-sented.
