Pilot Wetland Treatment, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings
In conjunction with Pope & Talbot’s plan to expand the Halsey, Oregon bleached kraft mill, it was decided to investigate alternatives to remove BOD5 , total suspended solids (TSS), dioxin, nutrients, color, and AOX after conventional primary and secondary treatment.
Ten wetland cells were constructed in late 1990 and planted in early 1991. The 10 cells are 70’ wide and 210’ long, operating at 18" water depth. Cells were planted with cattail and bulrush. Cell growth was established during the spring and summer of 1991. Initial results show a 50% BOD5 reduction, an 85% TSS reduction, and an 80% reduction in nitrogen & phosphorus. To date, we notice no AOX or color reductions. Since suspended solids are removed, we expect to see a dioxin reduction, but test results so far have been non-detectable.
