Log Vat Water Treatment for Plywood Manufacturing to Achieve Zero Discharge, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings
A plywood manufacturer desired to reduce or eliminate discharge of log vat water from a production plant in Louisiana, and engaged Metcalf & Eddy, Inc. to evaluate options and to recommend a preferred solution. Based on con-sideration of multiple recycle, treatment, and disposal alternatives and bench scale testing, a continuous low flow (8-40 L/ minute) physical/chemical system was selected, designed, and implemented. Use of polymers alone without other coagulants was used to simplify operation, maximize flexibility, and prevent poten-tial interferences with sludge disposal in onsite hogged fuel boilers. Capital cost of the constructed system was about $215,000, and annual operating cost is expected to be about $50,000-$75,000.
