Variability of Effluents From Mills With Advanced Control, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings

The long term variability of BOD, TSS and AOX effluent discharges from several pulp and paper mills with some of the world’s most effective effluent control systems is analyzed. Daily and monthly variability are evaluated and seasonal effects analyzed. Both AST and ASB systems are included and compared.

The reference mills vary from new to over 100 years old, and are distinguished by discharging unusually low quantities of BOD and TSS. Some of the effluent treatment systems were constructed in the late 1980s, while others are old, and have generally been upgraded at least once. Data on discharges from mills with and without AOX control measures are presented. The mills concerned are identified and described briefly.
