Pulp and paper mills have historically been troubled by poor activated sludge settleability and associated high effluent TSS concentrations. What impact on sludge settleability do the following variables have on sludge settleability: high aeration basin temperatures, secondary fiber wastewater contribution and bleaching process chlorine substitution? How can any adverse impacts be counteracted? Treatability studies revealed that high aeration basin temperatures and increasing secondary fiber wastestream contribution adversely effected sludge settleability and could be counteracted by cooling tower expansion and biological selector usage. Chlorine substitution in the bleaching process did not demonstrate a noticeable impact on sludge settleability.
