My TAPPI Story: Prakash Malla
TAPPISAFE
A process design and capital and operating cost estimates were prepared for ultrafiltration of 63 l/s of effluent from the first extraction stage of a kraft bleach plant. The concentrate, about 4.3 l/s, could be incinerated in an existing recovery boiler. with minimal increase in the gross heat input. Black liquor evaporation requirements would increase by 7%. At a mill with low liquor losses, the sodium chloride concentration in white liquor would rise to 16 g/l, from the normal 2 g/l. Ultrafiltration equipment would have a total installed capital cost of CDN $l5,000,000 and would occupy a site 46 m by 17 m. Net operating costs would be about $1,200,000 per year. The electrical requirement is 1 MW. The colour of the combined mill effluent would decrease by 40%. and the AOX by 25%. Ultrafiltration complements biological treatment.
