My TAPPI Story: Eupidio Scopel
Due to the nature of their process, the Niagara of Wisconsin Paper Corporation mill experiences occasional odor problems in their waste treatment system. The odor, mainly hydrogen sulfide, had previously been controlled with some success by using chemical additives. However, improvements were needed to reduce chemical costs and enhance performance.
In November 1990, laboratory tests were performed which showed ferric chloride and Ferrisorb(tm) reduced the concentration of ionic sulfides in the waste treatment system. This reduction in concentration correlated to a reduction of hydrogen sulfide gas emission as described by Henry’s Law P(H2 S)g = k[H2 S]sol. A mill trial was conducted in January 1991 to confirm the lab results. Three separate operating conditions were evaluated during the trial.
