Reducing Effluent TSS From An Anaerobic Contact Plant, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings
The Alaska Pulp Corporation is operating an anaerobic contact plant designed to treat 14,000 cubic meters per day of sulfite evaporator condensate and caustic extraction liquor containing up to 170,000 kg of COD. The streams are treated in two 25,000 cubic meter reactor tanks equipped with lamella clarifiers. A previous paper in 1990 presented information on the start-up of the plant. Operations were initially limited to 40-50% of design hydraulic load by TSS carryover from the lamellas. Major changes have been madein the reactor effluent degassifiers, one of two lamella piping systems, and the lamella units to reduce TSS carryover. These mechanical changes, along with polymer addition, has increased plant capacity to approximately 9,300 cubic meters per day. System design modifications and related experience with fire/explosion safety, odor emissions and downstream aerobic polishing are described.
