Stone Container's Experience With Anaerobic Pretreatment at it's York, PA Mill, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings

The York mill has in the past discharged its untreated effluent to the York Sanitary system. The effluent had an average BOD level of 2000 to 3500 mg/l and a permit limit of 2800 mg/l. In 1986 the York Sanitary District started to demand that all Industries reduce their BOD loading to the POTW and In 1989 had the city passed an ordinance that required all effluent to be below 1500 mg/l of BOD. Stone Container Corp. looked at several options to lower Its BOD concentration and decided that an anaerobic system would be the best choice for the York Mill. This paper describes: 1. How the design parameters were chosen, 2. The construction and start up phases, and 3. The operation of the system.
