A wastewater (O/E) from a caustic extraction stage preceded by oxygen delignification was subjected to membrane treatment with eight commercially available membranes representative of ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and low pressure reverse osmosis (LPRO) types. The untreated wastewater was separated into apparent molecular weight (AMU) fractions by ultrafiltration through Amicon membranes with nominal apparent molecular weight cut-offs (MWCO) of 500, 1,000, 10,000 and 30,000 Daltons and characterized by total organic carbon (TOC) and color units (CU). The color and TOC distributions, for the 25 to 50% recovery samples were as follows.
