Use of Bacterial Cultures to Increase BOD Removal at a Sulfite Based Pulp and Paper Mill, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings

A major pulp and paper mill experienced influent BOD loadings that were 150% of theoretical design capacity causing the mill to exceed monthly average BODs. In order to maintain NPDES compliance BOD removal had to be improved. An increase in BOD removal was achieved through the use of a blend of 14 adapted microorganisms selected for their ability to degrade lignins, aliphatic hydrocarbons, and carbohydrates.

The microbial addition program was monitored using ATP (microbial counts)analysis, microscopic examination of protozoa type and population, dissolved oxygen uptake rates, nutrient residuals and daily effluent treatment data.
