Explosive Nature of Noncondensible Gases, 1992 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Reduced sulfur gases (TRS), are components of noncondensible gases (NCG), and are released from digesters and evaporators. They are generally collected and incinerated in order to meet environmental regulations. The TRS gases, along with turpentine, methanol and other organic components found in NCG, are explosive under certain conditions and the industry has experienced explosions in many systems handling NCG.

Recent data from an operating NCG system shows that NCG are normally not explosive. Using this knowledge, new NCG systems can be built that rarely experience explosions.
