Different nonbiological external treatment methods were investigated in the laboratory. It was possible to achieve a reduction in the level of AOX of more than 70 % when treating mill effluents from softwood kraft pulp. A mild alkaline treatment was found to give effective AOX reduction. The treatment is more effective on the effluents from the acidic bleaching stages. Substituting D for C in the first stage greatly improves the level of AOX reduction.
The lipophilic part of AOX may also be effectively reduced by combining alkaline treatment with adsorption. The quantity of chlorinated phenolics for example were found to decrease by more than 90 %.
