Grassroot Movements: The Role of Grassroots Politics in Bringing Effective Change, 1993 Environmental Conference Proceedings
A rapid change in the management of timberlands in the Pacific Northwest has resulted in impacted communities joining together to start a grassroot movement voicing the concerns of timber working families. By utilizing traditional grassroot approaches, the citizen action groups have added another dimension to the corporate industry responses to changing public expectations towards natural resource industries. In recognition of the messages being sent by the environmental community, the grassroot groups may be the most successful in answering the emotional, value-laden arguments often used by environmental activists. A matrix approach to understanding how best to use the grassroot messages, industry public relation efforts, and where the two intertwine might make for a successful coalition to help influence public opinion to be more favorable to natural resource industries.
