Membrane Technologies for Pulp and Paper Applications, 1993 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Membrane technologies for three different pulp and paper applications are currently under investigation at the Pulp and Paper Research Institute of Canada. These are:

- Ultrafiltration and Reverse Osmosis for the treatment of mechanical pulp mill effluents and water reuse,

- Electrolysis of a portion of weak black liquor in kraft mills for providing incremental kraft recovery capacity, low sodium and sulphur lignin and pure caustic, and

- Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis for the production of bleaching chemicals (e.g. caustic and chloric acid) while, at the same time, addressing a number of chemical imbalance problems at kraft mills.

This paper reviews these three technologies in terms of technical feasibility, process integration and economics.
