Modem landfill design and performance standards are frequently requiring the use of geomembrane composite and double liners for new facilities. Performance data from synthetically lined landfill sites has not been widely available. In order to evaluate the performance of synthetic liners, three recently constructed synthetically lined landfill sites currently in operation have been monitored and evaluated. Quantities of leachate removed by the primary and secondary collection systems from these landfills have been tabulated. This data shows that properly designed and constructed synthetic landfill liners provide effective containment of leachate. Results of this study indicate that a properly constructed single synthetic liner provides environmental protection equivalent or superior to that of typical clay lined facilities.
