My TAPPI Story: Dave Maddux
A potential landfill site was selected for disposal of waste from a nearby papermill, based upon proximity to the mill, favorable geologic conditions, and large available capacity due to topography. After several iterations, a design was proposed to meet performance standards required by the state that included a complex soil/geosynthetic composite liner system. Due to the rapid change of the geosynthetics market, products were specified in the final design that did not exist when the project began. The proposed liner system consists of a combination of geotextile, geonet, roughened coextruded HDPE/VLDPE geo-membrane, geosynthetic clay liner, sand drainage layer and natural compacted clay buffer. Stability of the liner system was a critical consideration when the design was evaluated. Because of the inadequacy and lack of published data on existing and new materials, a site specific program was implemented to test the strength of components and their interfaces.
