My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
Pilot testing results are analyzed from activated sludge treatment of combined neutral sulfite semi-chemical (NSSC) pulping wastewater and old corrugated container (OCC) pulping wastewater. The occurrence and persistence of filamentous microorganisms required testing of options for control of the filamentous microorganisms. Chlorination, selector technology and anaerobic pretreatment with a selector were tested for thier effectiveness in the control of filamentous microorganisms. Potential causes for the filamentous microorganisms included pulping liquor in the wastewater, starch in the OCC wastewater, sulphur compunds, and low F/M. The most likely causes for the filamentous microorganisms included the starch in the wastewater.
