My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
Laboratory experiments and mill trials were conducted to study factors affecting chloroform generation during the hypochlorite bleaching of secondary fiber. The factors studied were pulp washing prior to bleaching, temperature in the pulper, bleaching conditions (hypochlorite charge, pH, temperature, and pulp consistency), and recycled paper composition. Laboratory and mill trial results suggested three in-process options to reduce chloroform generation: (1) improved pulp washing, (2) reduced hypochlorite charge, and (3) bleaching conditions of temperature over 80°C and pH in excess of 12.
