Effect of Black Liquor Fuel-Bound Nitrogen on NOx Emissions, 1993 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Recovery boiler test results substantiate a strong correlation between the NOx emissions from a recovery boiler and the concentration of fuel-bound nitrogen in the black liquor. The relationship is supported by tests which vary the liquor nitrogen content by urea addition. Data from a number of short duration recovery boiler emissions tests, where the nitrogen content of the liquor was analyzed, provide a preliminary, single variable correlation of NOx emissions increasing as a function of increasing nitrogen content. A correlation of nitrogen conversion to NOx shows 10 to 20% of the fuel-bound nitrogen is converted to NOx with the percent conversion decreasing as the nitrogen content of the black liquor increases.
