Impact of Process Safety Legislation on the Handling of Paper Mill Chemicals, 1993 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Some of the chemicals used in paper mills - particularly in bleach plants - are listed as regulated materials in recent process safety legislation. This includes the Occupational Safety and Health standard on Process Safety Management, the upcoming Clean Air Act Amendments, and the earlier legislation of the states of New Jersey, California, and Delaware. Among the listed chemicals are ammonia, chlorine, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide, and sulfur dioxide. The regulations require special attention to the handling of these materials, to protect the public and employees from accidental releases.
