Pulp and Paper Industry Environmental Compliance Audit Results, 1993 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Environmental compliance audits are used to evaluate compliance with laws and regulations applicable to a facility.

The U.S. Pulp and Paper Industry operates major manufacturing facilities in 35 states. Participation in more than 30 environmental compliance audits at facilities in 18 of these states provides a data base for assessing the industry compliance.

There is a high level of compliance at the audited industry facilities. There were, however, a number of issues where various facilities were not in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations. These issues are significant because regulatory agencies and public interest groups may rank any noncompliance with the same severity regardless of the issue involved.
