24 Hour BOD Analysis, 1993 Environmental Conference Proceedings

A major shortcoming of the BOD analysis is the results take five days to obtain. This can be a major problem when using BOD results for process monitoring or compliance.

A more rapid method of determining primary effluent and final effluent BOD concentrations is to adjust seed and sample volumes for the primary effluent and sample volume for the final effluent, and incubate for 24 hours under the same conditions (dilution water, temperature) as described in Standard Methods (17th Edition), Procedure 5210. This will produce dissolved oxygen (0.0.) depletions which can be correlated to D.O. depletions of the same sample analyzed using the standard BOD5 analysis with a high degree of reliability. Its major benefit is you are able to obtain accurate BOD data in one-fifth the time.
