New Tracer Techniques for Pulp Mill Effluent Delineation - Setting the Basis for Effects Monitoring Programs, 1993 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Sampling protocols for environmental effects monitoring programs require accurate delineation of effluent plumes in receiving waters. Two complementary methods have been developed to meet this need: comprehensive in situ dye tracing leading to three-dimensional plume maps using the TRACER instrument package; and three-dimensional numerical dispersion modelling to account for actual discharge conditions and the full range of natural variation found in currents and winds. Both methods are described in this paper, using results from MacMillan Bloedel’s Powell River pulp and paper mill in British Columbia, Canada, to illustrate the concepts. The results show that both methods are essential for determining effluent pathways.
