Construction on Unstable Paper Mill Waste Using Structural Geogrids, 1994 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Sandra McGee, Kent Nilsson, Mark Taylor, Rick Wilkey

Vertical expansion of an 80-acre solid waste disposal facility was needed to provide additional disposal capacity and a stable foundation for final closure. The expansion was accomplished with three major design components:

-Vertical french drains, consisting of perforated pipe and gravel drainage media behind perforated sheet piling, were installed to provide effective removal of rain and pore water.

-Drainage layer covering the unstable waste surface, constructed of geogrid and sand, to provide access to the interior of the fill and a stable foundation for perimeter dikes and successive lifts of waste.

-Elevated perimeter dikes, constructed of compacted clay using structural geogrids, were built to provide the first of three additional lifts.
