Investigation of Semivolatile Hydrocarbons Detected in Groundwater Downgradient from A Wood Waste Disposal Site, 1994 Environmental Conference Proceedings
Kirk Girard & David Edelman
Semivolatile hydrocarbons, reported as total petroleum hydrocarbons as diesel by the California Department of Health Services, Leaking Underground Fuel Tank procedure, were detected downgradient from a wood waste disposal site. The hydrocarbons detected in the groundwater were erroneously identified and reported as diesel. They were, in fact, naturally occurring organic compounds leached from the wood waste. Unlike naturally occurring wood waste compounds, petroleum compounds are regulated as hazardous compounds and are considered constituents-of-concern under the site’s Waste Discharge Requirements.
This paper discusses the investigative approach and analytical techniques used to determine that the hydrocarbons found were actually naturally occurring organic compounds derived from wood waste.
