Development of Artificial Soil From Paper Mill Sludge, 1994 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Seiichi Kanasaki, Kaoru Ishii, Koji Takahashi

NIPPON Paper Industries Co.,Ltd. and Jomo Landscape Construction Co.,Ltd. have developed an artificial soil produced by mixing and fermenting special kiln ash of paper mill sludge with sewage sludge. This new technology will help alleviate the refuse and environmental disruption problems and promote more effective utilization of industrial waste. The greatest distinction is original technology which produces useful soil from two kinds of refuse, paper mill sludge and sewage sludge. This artificial soil is used mainly as plant bed for slope seeding method. We call this as “PMC (past, manure, carbon) method”. The effect of “PMC method” has been proved in field tests compared with former methods using mountain soil. Safety data shows content and elution of heavy metals is largely below the legal standard value.
