Constructed wetlands have been piloted at Champion International Corporation’s Pensacola, Florida, bleached kraft paper mill to evaluate their potential for final effluent polishing. Six surface-flow wetland cells were constructed and planted during the winter and spring of 1990 and 1991. The six cells are arranged in pairs with individual cell areas of 0.4, 0.2, and 0.1 hectares (ha); length-to-width ratios of 2.5, 5, and 10:1; and six planting zones in each cell that include softrush, maidencane, sawgrass, duck potato, cattails, bulrush, and four other plant species. Each pair of cells has one cell with deeper water zones that are perpendicular to the flow path and one cell without deep zones.
