The “Mill Close-Up and Transition Metals Control” research program at the University of Idaho is reviewed in this paper. Primary funding for this work is from the NCASI 301m program. Strong industry support and a close working relationship with the Louisiana-Pacific Samoa Mill have also been key factors.
The three major research areas in the University of Idaho program are:
1. Model development and mill system simulation to aid in optimizing bleaching with chlorine and chlorine dioxide.
2. Transition metal control when closing-up TCF bleaching systems.
3. Use of full-mill simulation to assess the mill-wide impact of close-up.
