Development of a New Bleaching System Based on the Use of Oxygen Derived Chemicals, 1994 Environmental Conference Proceedings

J.L. Colodette, U.P. Singh, A.K. Ghosh, Bindu Dhasmana, R.P. Singh

This paper summarizes the impact of environmentally benign bleaching chemicals such as oxygen, ozone and peroxide either alone or in combination with chelants and/or xylanase in bleaching of chemical pulps to high brightness. The scope of the experimentation includes the optimization of the aforementioned chemical treatments compatible with existing technology.

Fully bleached (88+ ISO) softwood and hardwood kraft pulps of acceptable quality are produced by processes involving these chemicals. Metals removal treatments are absolutely necessary in these processes, being chelation at neutral pH the most attractive alternative. Bleaching of softwood kraft pulp requires the application of oxygen (O), ozone (Z), peroxide (P), chelant (Q) and xylanase (X) in sequences such as O(X+Q)P(ZE)P and OX(ZE)QP whereas hardwood kraft pulps demand somewhat shorter sequences.
