Diffuser Design in a Fjord Environment-A Case Study, 1994 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Alaska Pulp Corporation needed to comply with reduced wastewater limits contained in a draft NPDES permit. A new outfall diffuser system was selected as one method to meet these requirements. Design of an outfall diffuser system with minimal head loss discharging into complex fjord type receiving waters is presented. Achieving a minimal design dilution while trapping the plume in a near surface waters for multiple receiving waters conditions are presented. The final design allows the mill to accept a 300 percent decrease in effluent discharge limits for dilutable parameters with a minimal capital expenditure, and no increase in mill operations or maintenance costs.
