An aerated stabilization basin, or any subsection of the overall basin, should function as (a) an oxidation reactor for soluble BOD, (b) a clarifier for suspended solids, and (c) a benthal aerobic/anaerobic digester for settled particulates. A relatively simple set of calculations can be used to evaluate the reaction, settling, and digestion efficiencies of zones within a lagoon system. The evaluation can be particularly helpful when trying to limit both BOD and nutrient discharges. Only SBOD, TSS, and NH4–N or PO4–P measurements are needed to support the analysis.
