Folic Acid Reduces the Use of Secondary Treatment Additives in Treating Wastewater From Paper Recycling, 1994 Environmental Conference Proceedings

R. K. Ackerboom, P. Lutz, H. F. Berger

Some wastewater treatment plants have found that the addition of folic acid, a B vitamin, has helped them to overcome operating problems. Microscopic observation of secondary treatment seems to indicate that folic acid promotes the growth of a more diverse and active biomass. In these cases folic acid appears to have improved secondary treatment operation, leading to cleaner effluent, better settling, more stable operation and/or less waste sludge, depending on the plant involved. Operators at paper recycling plants in the United States and England have used this vitamin to improve activated sludge wastewater treatment, and have experienced a coincident decrease in consumption of chemical additives and net cost savings.
