In most states, semivolatile hydrocarbons, reported as total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) are regulated pursuant to Chapter 40, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 280. These regulations were implemented by the states to give guidance for cleanup of petroleum impacted soil and groundwater. However, unlike petroleum hydrocarbon compounds, naturally occurring organic wood (biogenic) compounds which are not regulated as hazardous compounds interfere with standard TPH quantification, often resulting in artificially elevated TPH concentrations. The remainder of this paper discusses the issues related to biogenic inter-ference, problems with the current TPH testing methods, and results of alternative laboratory testing methods.
