Sustainability is emerging as an international standard for forest management. Criteria of sustainable forestry are being discussed within the forest products industry and in a variety of national and international organizations. NCASI research on sustainable forestry is in three main areas: (a) effects of intensive management practices and "greenhouse gases" on forest health and productivity; (b) effects of forest management on water quality, wildlife, and wetlands; and (c) relationships among environmental policies, timber supplies, and sustainable development.
