Klebsiella Interference in Fecal Coliform Testing, 1995 Environmental Conference Proceedings

A. C. Richards

Virginia Military Institute

In conjunction with Virginia Fibre Corporation of Amherst, Virginia, the problem of bacteriological interference with Fecal Coliform testing in wastewater discharge was examined. Several different options were investigated including drainfield disposal of sanitary wastewater, disinfection of the sanitary wastewater stream, and changing indicator organisms. It was found that changing indicator organisms and/or moving the compliance test point to the sanitary wastewater were the most effective methods of dealing with the interference problem.
