This study examines the role which furnish type and final product grade structure play in defining wastewater characteristics at non-deink recycle mills. Based on preliminary responses to a NCASI/RPTA/ EPA survey, mills are categorized into segments based on products manufactured. For the three largest segments, statistically significant (at the 90 percent confidence level) differences among average BOD5 raw waste loadings were found between each of the categories whereas average TSS raw waste loadings were found to be statistically different in only one of three cases. Average water usage among the three production segments was not statistically different. These conclusions are based on a preliminary analysis of the survey data and may be updated in the future pending further study.
