Technological options exist for timber conservation by using more recycled fiber, new composite or engineered wood products, and substitutes based on alternative materials or technologies. Given these technological options, conservation could occur as an economic response to market conditions. This is supported by historical trends, economic theory, and cost comparisons. In the longrun, market conditions and technology development could lead to timber conservation in much the same way that constraints on energy resources recently led to energy conservation. In any case, markets and technology together play a significant role in timber conservation.
