Protection of native biological diversity, especially in forested landscapes, has emerged as a significant management issue for private as well as public lands managers. While federal agencies rush to modify their missions to embrace ecosystem management to achieve biodiversity goals, the majority of the nations’ forests remain in private hands, where such objectives may not be as quickly adopted. This paper reviews three distinct attempts by Champion International Corporation to involve public agencies, conservation interests, and other landowners in identifying and implementing appropriate biodiversity management objectives in a working forest setting. We will review the history, status, and learnings from each case study, and suggest guidelines that might increase the likelihood of success for other similar efforts.
