Until recently, knowledge of Russian effluent treatment practices has been limited. A commonly held perception was of an industry characterized by lack of regulation and concern about responsible environmental practice. There are some mills requiring significant environmental improvement, however others, such as those reviewed in this paper are characterized by advanced waste water treatment systems. (2) A number of Russian effluent treatment plants include a tertiary treatment component. Three activated sludge plants are reviewed in this paper. These include Baikalsk, Svetogorsk, and Kotlas Pulp & Paper Companies. Methods of treatment include: chemical precipitation at the Baikalsk P & P Co., flotation/sand filtration at the Svetogorsk P & P Co., and a polishing basin at the Kotlas P&PCo.
