Within the last ten years the requirements for the protection of the environment have notably become more stringent. A solution to the environmental pollution at the pulp mill, which produces bleached chemical pulp lies mainly in elimination of the bleaching plant waste water. Non-chlorine bleaching of sulfite pulp, which enables a high degree of process water recirculation, provides a solution to this problem. Its elimination with the presently existing recovery equipment can be achieved without the need to invest in special incineration operational unit. Pollution is eliminated technologically, at the site of origin and not by means of waste water treatment plant expansion. The developmental trend for the protection of the environment, the current state of the production technology and the means of solving, as well as, complying to recent demanding requirements are discussed in this paper.
