Many regulatory agencies in northern climates restrict land application of wastewater sludge to nonwinter months when the sludge can be incorporated into the soil. This requires sludge generators to invest in expensive winter sludge storage facilities. A study was performed to assess the potential impact to water quality from runoff from fields where unincorporated secondary sludge is land applied during winter months and to determine the agronomic sludge application rates. The results of the study indicate that winter land application of secondary sludge did not impact water quality at the site and was an effective method for the disposal of sludge for fields with the appropriate slope, soil, and vegetative cover.
