In a kraft pulp mill the alkaline bleaching stream, El effluent, is processed by nanofiltration (NF) for removal of organo and organochlorinated compounds of low molecular weight. This operation yields also a partial demineralization with production of water that does not comply with the quality requirements of washing waters for pulp bleaching. In order to meet these requirements further processing by electrodialysis (ED) is carried out. The optimization of a sequence of operations NF/ED allows the recycling of the purified wastewater as a process water for the pulp bleaching plant.
