In 1993 the Peace River bleached kraft mill found that approximately 50% of the total particulate catch from its smelt dissolving tank was comprised of ammonia salts. To address the high particulate catch due to ammonia salts the mill pursued a two-track strategy: (1) determine the source of the ammonia and if possible eliminate it; and (2) modify the dissolving tank’s wet scrubber to minimize particulate, with focus on the ammonia-based particulate. This paper documents the efforts in executing that strategy.
