My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
An improved solvent-extraction and solid-extraction based procedure for the gas chromatographic separation and analysis of individual resin acids in wood chips. pulp. process water and effluent has been developed. This technique has been used to measure the solubility of individual resin acids and their extraction during various stages of thermomechanical pulping. The effect of pulping variables on the formation of resin acids during pilot scale TMP refining has been statistically analysed and it has been found that refiner pressure, preheating time. and amount of dilution water affect resin acid formation whilst plate gap and specific energy have little effect. The toxicity of individual resin acids has also been determined by a bioassay procedure using Daphnia magna, and the data has been shown to correlate well with fish toxicity measurements.
