My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
Presented is the first comparison ever made of performances between membrane bioreactor (MBR) and conventional activated sludge treatment system (AS), for the treatment of a chemithermomechanical pulping (CTMP) effluent. Experimental results indicated that the performances of the MBR were superior to those of the AS. The gains obtained arc mostly significant for the removals of chemical oxygen demand (COD), suspended solids (SS), and the toxicity of 48h-LC50 for Daphnia Magna. The amount of lignins onto the biosludge in the MBR was found to be higher as compared with that inside the AS, and as consequence, the lignin concentration in the permeate from the MBR was less than that measured in the final effluent of the AS.
