Anoxic conditioning and UV irradiation of recycled activated sludge applied during the treatment of bisulphite chemi-mechanical pulp (BCMP)/newsprint effluent reduced the sludge yields by 31 and 18%, respectively. The removals of BOD, COD, TOC and toxicity were not affected by the sludge treatment techniques tested. The capital costs of sludge conditioning and dewatering were estimated at $1,230,000 - $1,560,000. Sludge handling operating costs were $5.1 - $7.2/adt of newsprint, compared to $9.l/adt for a conventional system without sludge treatment. The return on capital investment was calculated at 0.0 and 0.3 years, for UV irradiation and anoxic conditioning, respectively.
