Color and Organics Removal from ECF Bleach Sequence Filtrates By Adsorption, Advanced Oxidation and Membrane Processes, 1996 Environmental Conference Proceedings
An acid stage filtrate (E1 ) and an alkaline stage (E0 ) filtrate were studied in support of strategies to attain Bleach Effluent Free (BEF) conditions with the ultimate goal of Minimum Impact Manufacturing (MIM). Prior to treatment studies, both filtrates were chemically characterized after separation by ultrafiltration (UF). Membranes with nominal molecular weight cut-offs (MWCO) of 500, 1,000, 3,000 and 10,000 Daltons (D) were used to produce permeates that were analyzed for color and total organic carbon (TOC). The treatment processes examined were activated carbon adsorption, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and serial processing employing microfiltration (MF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. The parameters examined were adsorbent type, solution pH, oxidant type (ozone, hydrogen peroxide) and catalyst (UV254nm). Individual process streams from the D1 and E0 stage treatment study.
