Treatability of RCRA Regulated Compounds in CWA Surface Impoundments, 1996 Environmental Conference Proceedings

Knowledge of the treatability of organic compounds potentially present in untreated mill effluents is needed to respond to regulatory initiatives such as SARA reporting requirements and the proposed Land Disposal Restrictions rule. This study addresses the biotreatability of selected compounds for which biological treatment is the proposed BDAT technology under the LDR rule. Bench-scale activated sludge systems are used to develop biodegradation rate coefficients for each compound studied. The fate of the individual compounds during full-scale treatment is then estimated using the NOCEPM model, with the bench-scale biodegradation rates coefficients entered as a model input.
