Implementation of ECF Bleaching at Mead Paper Co., Chicllicothe, Ohio, 1996 Environmental Conference Proceedings

In August 1994, Mead Paper Co., Chillicothe, Ohio, converted the bleaching process from 50% chlorine dioxide substitution to ECF. An assessment of the conversion from 50% ClO2 substitution to ECF for both hardwood and softwood pulp shows:

- Pulp quality was excellent;

- Hardwood pulp strength improved --

contributing to a shift in hardwood:softwood ratio in paper production;

- The overall sequence Kappa Factor for

hardwood increased 14%;

- The overall sequence Kappa Factor for

softwood increased 5%; and

- Bleaching cost increased 20%;

Effluent properties improved substantially. The mill is well on the way towards achieving many of the water quality guidelines proposed in EPA’s “Cluster Rules.”
